The city's deep Germanic roots and history are most evident during the annual Oktoberfest, the largest celebration of all things Bavarian outside of Germany.
Guelph was founded in 1827 by a Scottish novelist, John Galt. Guelph, referred to as "The Royal City." got its name from the surname of one of the British Royal Families.
Guelph's vibrant downtown has many great attractions, including the River Run Centre for the performing arts, Guelph Civic Museum, The Sleeman Centre Sports Complex and a farmer's market that is open year-round on Saturday mornings. The downtown core also offers an outdoor skating rink in the winter, many fabulous shops and an array of restaurants.
Guelph also has many beautiful parks throughout the city, including the Royal City park set on the Speed River and known for its trails and Riverside Park, which hosts an annual Multicultural festival, Canada Day celebrations and Rotary Ribfest.
The University of Guelph, centrally located in the city, is considered one of the top universities in Canada. The University is known for it's Veterinary Medicine and Agricultural programs.
